Episode Synopsis
Meryl chats with Elan Barnehama about his new novel, Escape Route, which takes place in the late 1960s during the War in Vietnam. It is a coming-of-age story seen through the eyes of the teenage son of Holocaust survivors.
Escape Route (published in May 2022) is Elan Barnehama’s second novel. It’s set in New York City during the tumultuous late 1960s and told by Zach, the first-generation son of Holocaust survivors. An avid NY Mets fan, Zach becomes obsessed with the Vietnam War and with finding an escape route for his family for when he believes the US will round up and incarcerate its Jews.
Elan’s writing has appeared on numerous sites, including the Jewish Writing Project, Rough Cut Press, Boston Accent, Jewish Fiction, HuffPost, the New York Journal of Books, and Public Radio. He earned an MFA from UMass, Amherst and a BA from Binghamton. Elan has taught college writing, worked with at-risk youth, had a gig as a radio news guy, and also worked as a short-order cook. He's from New York and says he is a Mets fan by default.
