A former two-sport star at UMass Amherst, he earned All-America honors in baseball and excelled as both a shortstop and point guard. Drafted in the 3rd round by the San Diego Padres, Joe went on to captain his minor league team before health challenges led him to focus on coaching and teaching.As a coach, Joe has amassed over 300 wins in high school basketball and has guided countless athletes in both basketball and baseball, including at Somerville High School, Winchester High School, Matignon High School, and Bunker Hill Community College. He also founded and directed the Middlesex Baseball Camp for 40 years.His achievements include induction into the UMass Athletic Hall of Fame, the New England Basketball Hall of Fame, the Intercity Semi-Professional Baseball Hall of Fame, and the Somerville High School Hall of Fame. Recognized repeatedly as “Coach of the Year” by organizations such as the Boston Globe and the Baseball Umpires Association, Joe’s legacy reflects both his leadership on the court and diamond, and his impact as an educator and mentor.When not on the sidelines, Joe served for decades as a teacher and administrator in the Somerville Public Schools and as Principal of Matignon High School, where he continued to blend academics with athletics.
