Listen "106 - Toxic Masculinity in Dance"
Episode Synopsis
On the heels of the worst scandal to rock the ballet world since the Bolshoi Ballet acid attack, this week’s episode is inspired by recent events surrounding a lawsuit against New York City Ballet and one of its male dancers. In response to claims that New York City Ballet allowed a fraternity-like atmosphere where certain men demeaned and disrespected women, Barry discusses how some men in dance use toxic masculinity as a defense mechanism in an art form often considered effeminate. He shares where he believes it starts, talks about his own experiences with it, and offers possible resolutions to fix the issue. Pas de Chát's host Barry Kerollis is an award-winning choreographer, instructor, and dancer with over 13 years experience in the dance world. His career includes directing Alaska Dance Theatre, dancing for Pacific Northwest Ballet, and traveling the country as a nationally-touring freelance artist.
