Listen "#93 | Leviticus and Atonement: The Purification Offering Part 3"
Episode Synopsis
In this epsiode we fast forward to Leviticus to look at a cryptic story of the purification offering where Aaron's sons get in trouble with Moses for not eating the flesh of the purification offering. The eating of the flesh of the animal was a significant part of the purification offering because it was directly connected to the process of making atonement. When the priests ate the flesh of the purification animal it is said they "bear the iniquity" to make atonement for them. When the worshipper layed their hands on the animal, they transferred their iniquity to the flesh of the animal. But...they did not transfer iniquity to the blood of the animal. The blood remained pure, while the flesh received iniquity. The blood cleanses the tabernacle furniture, but the iniquity in the flesh of the animal had to somehow be "dealt with". And this was done by the priests either burning the animal completely up outside the camp (the purification offering for the High Priest or the entire assembly) or by the priests eating the flesh of the animal (the purification offering for the leader and the common person).
This maps over onto Jesus in Romans 8:3 where it says that Jesus came in "the likeness of sinful flesh". That means when Jesus became a human, like the purification offering, he received a broken human condition from his mother. His flesh was like our flesh. It had the same powers working against him that our flesh has working against us. What Jesus did in his flesh was to partner with God to condemn - resist and rule over - the power of sin in his flesh. But this took place over the entire course of his life - not just at his death. By resisting and ruling over the power of sin in his flesh, Jesus was able to heal and transform that broken human condition that he received from his mother. God then raised him up from the dead and completed that healing and transformation in him.
