Listen "#91 | Leviticus and Atonement: The Purification Offering Part 1"

Episode Synopsis

In this episode we begin a short series on the Purification Offering in Leviticus 4. Now that God is dwelling among his people, the Source of Life is now being "exposed" to death in more practical ways. The system of clean and unclean really points to a distinction between life and death, so that cleanness somehow points to and symbolizes life, and uncleanness points to and symbolizes death. When someone sins, it somehow accelerates death in themselves and/or others, and therefore pollutes and contaminates the Tabernacle - the place where the Source of Life dwells. The amazing thing about God is that he cannot be in the presence of death without trying to bring life to it. He's like a medic that shows up to an accident and encounters a wounded person trapped in their car. God's first impulse is to bring life and make things right. The sacrificial system is God's way of inviting Israel to meet with him, and partner with him, in cleaning up the death and perpetuate his Life in and among them once that death has entered the picture.
We also talk about the different kinds of commandments (performative and prohibitive) and the different types of sins (intentional and unintentional) and how this relates to the purification offering. Using the illustration of The Portrait of Dorian Gray we also discuss the purpose of the purification offering, what is being purified/cleansed, why it needs to be purified/cleansed, and how this relates to the need for a sacrifice.
We connect this with Jesus and our own need for cleansing and purification so that we can experience a life-giving relationship with God. This cleansing/purification is not just about a sinful act. It's also about being cleansed from anything that brings death or drains us of life. For example, negative thoughts, or a heavy situation that weighs us down.
