Listen "#61 | God empowers Joseph to Forget the Past and Live in the Present"
Episode Synopsis
In this episode, we look at Joseph's naming of his two sons - Manasseh and Ephraim - and how that symbolizes Joseph's struggle to "forget" all his hardship from the past and move forward to be "productive" in the present. This had to be a difficult thing for Joseph to do, but the encouraging thing is that, despite his traumatic experiences of rejection, betrayal, and oppression, God helped Joseph to not get stuck in those wounds, but to move through, and past those experiences to a place where he was able to be fruitful in his life. And this undoubtedly required Joseph to reach a point where he forgave his brothers for selling him into slavery.
We then look at how Jesus had to face this same struggle, but in a more profoundly intense way on the cross. His prayer, "Father forgive them, for they know not what they do", is a testimony about Jesus' relationship with the Father. Jesus received the Father's love so deeply into his heart that it empowered him to channel that love towards his enemies, and resist the temptation to become like them in their hatred and violence towards him. In this way, Jesus was able to exercise authority over the power of sin in his own flesh, the power that wants to steer all of us into bitterness and unforgiveness.
Key Passages
Genesis 41:41-56
Luke 23:32-34
