Dr. Novenson sits down with Dr. Botner to discuss his book Paul, Then and Now. Our conversation covers the challenge of reading Paul in his historical context, the centrality of Paul (especially Romans and Galatians) to Protestant Christianity, the ways in which Paul has been interpreted and reinterpreted in the Christian tradition, as well as key interpretive issues in Paul's letters.
Dr. Matthew V. Novenson is Senior Lecturer in New Testament and Director of the Centre for the Study of Christian Origins at the University of Edinburgh. His research interests cluster around the question of how first-century Christian texts fit alongside non-Christian Jewish texts from the same period, in the time before Christianity emerged as a Greco-Roman religion in its own right. He has published on a range of topics including the Pauline epistles, early Christian Christology, the Bar Kokhba revolt, ancient biblical interpretation, and ancient rhetoric.
