Listen "Trauma-Informed Care and Impact-Regarding Praxis"

Episode Synopsis

I've read, heard, and experienced a tremendous amount of lip service offered regarding trauma-informed care. Much of it retrofits the profitable and ubiquitous standards of pathology, medicalization, punitive compliance training, forced assimilation, and radical behaviorism...onto the language of trauma-informed care. This manipulated version is, neither in spirit nor impact, a caring and impact-regarding endeavor.

What actually is…trauma-informed care?

It turns out, there is no standardized or general definition and how any person, organization, or government defines Trauma-Informed Care depends fully on their values, frameworks, worldviews, proximity to or existence with power, income or socioeconomic status, upbringing and other relevant backgrounds including training and education.

And...what is trauma?

For our purposes today, I'll use the definition offered by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration through the Department of Health and Human Services, or HHS) in the document, “SAMHSA’s Concept of Trauma and Guidance for a Trauma-Informed Approach. Prepared by SAMHSA’s Trauma and Justice Strategic Initiative in July 2014.” SAMHSA offers, "Individual trauma results from an event, series of events, or set of circumstances that is experienced by an individual as physically or emotionally harmful or life threatening and that has lasting adverse effects on the individual’s functioning and mental, physical, social, emotional, or spiritual well-being."
