Listen "Episode 51: The Search for Black Holes and Quasars with Dr. Ohad Shemmer"
Episode Synopsis
In this episode, Susan discusses some of the latest developments in astrophysics with Dr. Ohad Shemmer, Associate Professor in UNT's Physics Department. Last year, Dr. Shemmer and his colleagues reported their discovery of the oldest black hole known to astronomers. Susan begins their conversation by asking Dr. Shemmer to clarify the various terms used to describe the study of our universe. Next, he provides a definition of black holes that helps to explain how scientists are able to detect them across vast distances. Professor Shemmer goes on to describe quasars and how they are related to black holes. Finally, he and Susan discuss the importance of recent discoveries in these fields, most importantly, how they allow scientists to better understand the history of our universe.
