Episode Synopsis
In this episode, Jessica Yellin speaks with Professor India Thusi of Indiana University’s Maurer School of Law. They discuss the case of former chief strategist to President Trump, Steven K. Bannon and his failure to comply with a federal subpoena about the events of January 6th, 2021. The select committee panel is scheduled to vote on the contempt charge against Bannon on Tuesday, October 19th and is expected to approve the charge. A vote could then be taken up by the full House of Representatives in short order. The possibility of holding Bannon in Contempt of Congress, a misdemeanor criminal offense, could result in up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000. Criminal contempt can only be pursued by the Justice Department.In addition to Bannon, the committee has subpoenaed documents and testimony from other key Trump advisers, including former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, former deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino and Kash Patel, a former national security and Defense Department aide.India Thusi holds a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology and Law & Society and is a Professor of Law at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law with a joint appointment at the Kinsey Institute. Her articles and essays have been published in numerous law journals and she served as a federal law clerk in the US at the Constitutional Court of South Africa, that nation’s highest court.
