Colleen Wagner, Author, Activist, Teacher, Feminist, Environmentalist.
Best known as a playwright, Colleen Wagner’s writing includes, screenplays, documentary films, poetry and short fiction. Her work has garnered many national and international awards, including the Governor General’s literary award for her play, The Monument. Her plays have been translated into a dozen languages and continue to be produced around the world.
She is a past recipient of a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) research and creation grant that explored a female centered heroic myth based on the actual stories of women and girls who had survived trauma in post-conflict zones and those of women in existing matrilinear societies. The result of this work resulted in a feature documentary film, Women Building Peace that won the Silver Wave Film Festival award for best documentary in 2016 (distributed by Moving Images Distribution); an interactive website; www.thelivingplay.com and a play, The Living.
She has taught writing at York University, Sheridan College, Ryerson University and University of Toronto as well as numerous writing workshops across Canada.
A concerned environmentalist she has been an active member of New Brunswick’s ‘Voices for Sustainable Environments and Communities’ advocating for the rights of the child to a healthy environment, and a more wholistic and sustainable approach to our land use. She has been an active member of the Voice of Women for Peace in Toronto, a vegetarian, meditator and avid walker.
