I examine the core source of this pain as a disconnect from a fundamental truth about oneness with the universe.  This concept is expressed in the words of a renowned Sioux spiritual leader, Black Elk, who states: "The first peace, which is the most important, is that which comes within the souls of people when they realize their relationship, their oneness with the universe and all its powers..." I examine the disconnect within the context of historical trauma, assimilation and cultural genocide of Native American peoples.
