# How the World Was Created at Ile-IfeWhen God decided to create the world from endless waters, he sent his messenger Obatala to perform this task. Obatala descended from heaven on a rope with his helper Oduduwa, bringing a calabash of earth and a chicken. During their journey, they stopped at a feast where Obatala drank too much palm wine and became intoxicated. Seeing his master incapacitated, Oduduwa took the calabash and chicken, continuing the journey alone. Upon reaching earth, Oduduwa sprinkled earth from the calabash onto the water's surface and released the chicken, which ran in all directions, spreading the soil and creating land where there had been only water. When Obatala finally sobered, he was upset to find Oduduwa had completed his assigned task. God consoled him by giving him a new responsibility—creating the humans who would populate the newly formed earth.
