Listen "Exploring infertility"
Episode Synopsis
MUOGS, at your cervix, is an Obstetrics and Gynaecology podcast series brought to you by Melbourne University Obstetrics and Gynaecology society. It’s created by medical students for medical students and anybody interested in women’s health. Each episode, we take on and unpack a different topic within the world of O&G with experts in the field.
While not all medical students have the opportunity to observe fertility medicine in action during their women's health placements, an understanding of fertility underpins much of obstetrics and gynaecology. The spectrum of normal fertility is often misunderstood, with many couples concerned that they have not conceived in their first month of trying. In fact, 80% of couples will conceive in 6 months and 90% will conceive in 12 months. Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive a pregnancy after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse, and affects 1 in every 6 Australian couples of reproductive age.
So today we'll be delving into all things fertility with Dr. Raelia Lew and Dr. Michelle Peate.
Dr. Lew is a CREI Fertility specialist, Gynaecologist and the Director of Women’s Health Melbourne. She has published widely in Australian and International peer review journals and has authored Australasian Guidelines on Preconception Genetic Screening and Elective Oocyte Preservation. She is also a clinical senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne and involved in medical teaching at The Royal Women’s hospital. Her passions are health promotion and education in fertility- she believes that quality education, delivered in the right way at the right time can empower women and couples to make the best choices in life. Her podcast, “Knocked Up” is a great platform to communicate accurate up to date fertility and women’s health information to patients and a much wider audience. Welcome to the podcast Dr. Lew.
Dr Michelle Peate is the Program Leader for the Psychosocial Health and Wellbeing Research (emPoWeR) Unit, at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Melbourne. She is a behavioural scientist and her focus is on developing resources to help improve the reproductive health experiences of women across a range of conditions and scenarios such as fertility preservation decision-making in cancer, unmet needs in endometriosis, and managing menopause after cancer. Her work is internationally recognized - resulting in a number of awards, international presentations, and roles on clinical practice guideline committees. Today she is talking to us about the psychosocial impact of elective egg freezing.
