Listen "Baye Kouyate, Master Talking Drummer"
Episode Synopsis
Baye takes us all over West Africa as we follow the vast cultural web of the talking drum in the griot tradition of storytelling. Featuring exclusive LIVE performance recorded in Modiba Studios, Brooklyn.
Talking drum ("tama") master and griot Baye Kouyate is a resident musican at musician-owned Zebulon Cafe in Williamsburg, NYC. Originally from Bamako, Mali, Baye has been in New York for two years, playing with the likes of New York frontmen Famoro Diabate (balafon) and Yacouba Sissoko (kora). Before touching down in the New York City scene, Baye spent five years in Paris playing alongside French-Ivorian innovator Toma Sidibe.
