Listen " EP38 - Wanda "
Episode Synopsis
Welcome to Milkweed and Monarchs. I’m Dawn Klem, and today, I share the story of Wanda—a dear friend, a mentor, and a woman whose resilience shaped my understanding of life, loss, and advocacy.
Wanda’s journey was one of strength. Raised in the projects of Boston, she and her sister navigated hardship early, losing their father in middle school and watching their mother battle multiple sclerosis. Despite the challenges, Wanda pursued nursing, determined to ensure that patients—especially those in senior care—received dignity and respect.
Our friendship began at the Barron Center in Portland, Maine, where she worked as the Assistant Director of Nursing. Her directness, humor, and unwavering commitment to quality care made her unforgettable. But beyond her career, Wanda had a deep love for animals, rescuing dogs and cats, and eventually opening her own dog grooming business.
In this episode, I reflect on the impact she had on my life, the lessons she taught me, and the heartbreaking moment when she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Her fight was fierce, but her spirit remained unshaken.
Join me as I honor Wanda’s legacy, recounting the moments that defined her, the laughter we shared, and the profound ways in which she influenced my path.
