Kejo Buchanan, guide of Jali Journey in conversation Empress Nyiringango, an Ottawa-based Rwandan Canadian award-winning singer-songwriter, actress and educator. Empress is a self-taught musician blending jazz, blues and traditional Rwandan sounds featuring the Inanga (zither) and traditional dances like the Umushayayo gracefully imitating the Ankole cattle. Her songs such as “Amahoro i Rwanda” (Peace in Rwanda), and “Afrika” (Ubuntu album) are inspired by love, life experiences and peoples’ struggles especially grief from the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Empress Nyiringango welcomes you into a musical journey of faith, resilience and healing.
