Mercuzio: Sound Against ALS

Por: Clemente Ernesto De Martino
As an expert in the dynamics of involutive age, I consider the experience with Mercuzio a unique meeting point between sound, art, and resilience. ALS does not only affect the muscles: it transforms the body in a slow metamorphosis, where even words become fragile, fragmented, almost unreachable. Understanding Mercuzio in the beginning was a challenge: his words seemed to hide behind broken sounds, and listening required rare patience. This is where the method of socio-recreational artistic stimulation revealed its full strength: music, rhythm, and small graphic gestures created an alternative language, able to go beyond speech. It was no longer about correcting a defect, but about discovering a new way of communicating. Over time, thanks to his determination and our growing harmony, Mercuzio turned limitation into creation. He directed a homemade short film, proving that even in extreme fragility, a person can remain the protagonist of their own life — able to invent, guide, and tell their story. This experience not only enriched him, restoring identity and creative dignity, but also taught me — and everyone who witnessed his journey — that illness does not erase the inner voice. On the contrary, the greatest challenge is to learn how to listen to it with new instruments.
