According to Rav Shisha brei deRav Iddi, the Chachamim and Raban Shimon ben Gamliel both prohibit acts of ostentation but differ in how they define the idea. According to the Chachamim it is about standing above the socially accepted norms of religious behavior. According to Raban Shimon it is about adopting a level of piety above the one appropriate to who one truly is. Common to both is the tendency to distinguish oneself by outer actions and appearances rather than by inner character, and attitude abhorred by our Rabbis.
