Listen "Race: My First Encounter"
Episode Synopsis
Growing up I cannot remember actually talking about race as we do today. Times were much different. It's not that there wasn't social issues going on of racism, inequality or injustices. But living in a multi-cultural neighborhood reduced exposure to the larger issues of race at the time. My childhood was comprised of best friends that were black, Hispanic and white which is what formed my viewpoint of those I interact with today.
But this all started when a Trinidadian boy immigrated to the United States and began to attend school.
His first encounter with race begins in Ashbel Smith elementary school in Baytown, Texas, where he received his a gift, a pencil, from a little girl who was white. This is his first recollection of encountering another race.
