Welcome to Luso-scapes Episode #2 This episode of Luso-Scapes features a Symposium Snippet, a recording from the 2021 Lusophone Land Legacies in Comparative Perspective Symposium. This snippet includes the symposium keynote address presented by anthropologist Dr. Tania Murray Li titled, “Colonial Land Legacies: Questions and Insights from Southeast Asia”. Dr Tania Murray Li is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Toronto, where she holds the Canada Research Chair in the Culture and Political-Economy of Asia. She has conducted long-term interdisciplinary research on many aspects of land relations in colonially disparate Southeast Asia, illuminating how multiple actors engage critical issues of land and livelihoods across time. Her recent work on transitions, access, exclusion, interventions, and state projects has set the stage for the questions we are asking, and also inspired us to convene diverse scholars in collaborative learning during the Lusophone Land Legacies in Comparative Perspective Symposium. This symposium aimed to untangle and to understand the enduring legacies of colonial land policies and practices, and Dr. Li’s creative research designs remind us that comparative work is often necessary to address certain kinds of questions.
