For over two years, student journalists at Northwestern’s Medill Investigative Lab-Chicago have examined how police respond to mental health crises—often with force. In partnership with MindSite News and reporter Josh McGhee, they’ve explored alternatives like Chicago’s CARE program, part of the Treatment Not Trauma movement. Their national reporting highlights racial disparities and uplifts community-based responses. Reporter Rachel Yoon also spotlights mental health challenges within immigrant communities.
