Listen "Scientific Solutions To Every Problem"
Episode Synopsis
We are familiar with the division of science into hard and soft. The hard sciences are able to quantify data and therefore impose a level of accuracy on their findings not possible in the humanities. But number and measurement systems are not natural. Physics is not found to have mathematical equations. A mile is not observed in nature. It took a high level of sophistication to devise our metrics. It is one thing to invent numbers. It is another thing to invent an inch or degrees Celsius.
What use would numbers be if we could not use feet and inches to measure dimensional lumber? A board foot is a length. Length is a dimension. But what is there in human life that can be quantified? To create a science that solves social problems we first need to find the thing in human life that can be quantified.
