Episode Synopsis

Bumble, 7:54 AM
Akseniya
What are your green and red flags?
me
The green flags I look for are creativity and hobbies. The red flags I look for are overworking and… Harry Potter lol
Akseniya
I’m red flag 🥲😂😂😂 Harry Potter
me
Oh no!
The issue is really JK Rowling because she hates transgender people, and that is really hurtful to my trans friends.
So I don’t want to support her at all.
Akseniya
But they really not normal haha

Yep, I mean—there’s a reason that it’s a red flag. The best case is that they’re unaware. The worst case is that they too are awful people. I’m finding it harder and harder to understand if anyone can actually exist in the middle.
The thing is… when you’re a Harry Potter fan, this is the club you belong to.

Addendum
I reported this conversation. It breaks their identity-based hate guidelines. However, Bumble replied to me saying there was aparently no violation of their Community Guidelines, which they then linked me to.
I’m furious. So I wrote them back the following:
In the Identity-Based Hate section of Bumble’s guidelines, it states the following:
“We prohibit content or behavior that promotes or condones hate, dehumanization, degradation, or contempt against marginizled or minoritized communities based on the following protected attributes: […] gender identity or expression […].”
Now, Bumble made this rule for a reason. There are even specific mentions of what this is not limited to: “Insulting, expressing contempt, advocating harm, using degrading or disparaging language (including harmful stereotypes, expressions of superiority, inferiority, or dismissal), mocking, or taunting others based on a protected attribute”
This person that I reported very specifically said that transgender people are not normal. That is the very definition of expressing contempt and superiority / inferiority. Suggesting in any way that someone is “not normal” because of who they are attacks their very own identity, which they have every right to be. No one is “not normal” because of who they intrinsically are. I believe Bumble knows this.

If these rules are not there to protect Bumble’s most vulnerable users, then they’re just there for show.
