Listen "Nintendo"
Episode Synopsis
Like many of you, I have looked at the modern Nintendo logo for decades. There were many that came before it, but not many variations lately. Which is fine; I think they solidified on what was good for them. But over that time, I developed a perspective about lettering and type design. So—just for fun—I wanted to redraw it to meet the sensibilities I have without making any drastic changes that most people would notice. They don’t need a rebrand, but if they ever did, I would want it to be like this.
For comparison’s sake, here’s the original, again followed up by mine to inspect the differences more closely.
As you can see, I’ve made the mark a smidge bolder, while making the pill shape thinner. The round characters are a little rounder. When round shapes meet vertical stems like in the n and d, the stem tapers a tiny bit to give it some clarity. The aperture of the n is also a little narrower to match the space inside the e, d, and o.
I think it retains the character of the mark while tidying it up a little. I’m not saying I “fixed” it. This is just me thinking visually.
