Jesus said to the religious leaders of his day,
“You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.” John 5:39-40 (NIV)
So why were the Scriptures given to us? Not to think for us. Not to provide us with good advice. Not even to give us a plan of salvation. God gave us the Scriptures to bring us into the presence of his Son, Jesus Christ. Then, in his presence, Jesus uses the Scriptures to teach us what it means to walk with him as friend with friend, that is, to have life.
