Episode Synopsis

In a recent podcast I gave the following proposition, that to “glorify” God is to live each day seeing to it that God enjoys from us what he gave his life for — our friendship.
I’d like to spell that out as to what I think it means. Allow me to personalize it: What does the Lord want from you in the course of friendship with him?
First, I would say, companionship. And by that I mean a constant communication between the two of you.
Do you remember Jesus teaching that on the day of judgment there are going to be many who did remarkable things in his name. They will claim to have prophesied, done exorcisms, and even miracles in his name. But Jesus says that he will say to them, “‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’”  — Matthew 7:23
What happened? Didn’t Jesus know who they were and all about them? Sure he did. But they didn’t share their hearts with him. They didn’t tell him their ups and downs. They didn’t open up to him about their deepest fears, their aspirations, their failures, or successes. So, in that sense, he didn't know them. They shut him out of their daily lives, but lived using his name to just do their own thing.
Companionship with Jesus means we share with him all the stuff we naturally share with any trusted friend. And then of course we listen for his thoughts. He also wants to share what’s on his heart with us. He wants us to know him. And if we are determined to hear his voice we will — in the Scriptures, through what someone says to us, through circumstances, through dreams. He is exceedingly creative but he will make himself clear.
Another aspect of friendship with Jesus is loyalty. Jesus is always there for us. He will never fail anyone who puts their trust in him. For our part, loyalty to him means that we put his interests above our own so that he can trust is to be there for him, especially in the course of working with him to help others know how precious they are to him.
And this brings me to the third aspect of friendship with Jesus: usefulness. That is, adventuring with him on the cutting edge of what he’s doing in the hearts of people who come to our attention. He is always at his work of seeking to win their hearts, and he looks to us — his friends — for help.
