Listen "Earnestness Will Be Rewarded"
Episode Synopsis
Everything you do day to day really does come down to this: you do only what you consider worth your time and effort to do. If you get going on something you consider worth your time and effort, but after awhile you become convinced isn’t worth it, you’re done. You’ll find the quickest way out.
This is just human nature. We were created in such a way that to keep applying time and energy to anything, we need to envision something desirable coming from it.
There’s an assumption in the Bible that all human beings want certain things. I suggest that foremost among them are three realities:
We want to constantly experience inner perfect peace.
We want our hearts to always be full of joy.
And above all, we want to be unfailingly helpful to everyone we meet because if we’ll take time to notice it, early in life we find out that “it is more blessed [happy] to give than to receive.”
Having been created like this by Jesus, doesn’t it follow that he intends to fulfill these longings in our hearts? He sure does. When you look up to him, you are in the presence of someone totally committed to fully satisfying these yearnings. For that matter, with everything in him, Jesus works day and night to bring these things about. His passion does not wane and he never gets tired. No one even comes close to desiring the highest and best for you like he does. And no one could ever sacrifice themselves more for you than he has to see you filled to overflowing with these blessings.
So how worth it is it to you to live such a life? Or perhaps the more important question is, what does it take to bring to the surface the yearning deep within you to possess these things?
Here’s the simple truth: think about what’s desirable to you and your desire for it will grow.
This is a principle that seems to be at work in any one who aspires to some great achievement. It seems especially apparent in sports. What athlete doesn’t dream about being at the top of his game to where he has the admiration of fellow athletes and fans? Isn’t that vision what keeps him inspired during the drudgery of those many lonely hours in the weight room or out on the court or the field?
I’m convinced that it’s the same with anything we hope to see become true of us.
Routinely see yourself always at peace deep within. Think of how good that would be. Sit on the edge of your bed and ask, “what could I do to have a more peaceful heart?” Won’t the Lord answer that? Sure he will.
See yourself full of cheerful contentment — a glad and thankful heart. Meditate on how pleasant such a condition would be. Ask, “what would it take for me to have a more joyful heart?” You will receive an immediate reply.
But more than even these, see yourself as a person who is consistently helpful to everyone who crosses your path, who always imparts some kind of blessing — a prayer, a word, or action that generates encouragement. Doesn’t that resonate with you? Jesus is all in on this because he’s always looking for coworkers. He’ll instantly and gladly take you up on your interest.
You will come to so long for these things that you will begin to change up your thinking habits and your daily routine so as to spend more time in the light of the presence of Jesus. He will richly reward your earnestness. He said so himself, “Keep on asking and it will be given to you; keep on seeking and you will find; keep on knocking and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7
