Here is a reason why I cannot “judge” anyone in the sense of looking down on them — “condemning” them for any reprehensible attitudes or behaviors: It is because I could have avoided or curtailed almost all of my own rankling character issues, difficulties, and temptations were it not for the numberless self-serving, self-centered thoughts and choices that characterize and shape my life to this day.
Consequently, it is blind, hypocritical, and, for that matter, arrogant for me to allow another person’s repugnant attitude or behavior to dictate my responses to them. The question that needs to be asked — and that only the Holy Spirit can answer for us — is this: what does being helpful to this person look like right now, under these circumstances? What can I think, pray, do, or say, that will best serve to help them outgrow their problems, whatever they may be?
We need to ask the Spirit straight up and start the process of listening and acting on his answer.
