Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is victim.

Nouns are words that we use to name things. It can be a person, a place, a thing, an
idea or concept. Therefore, victim is a noun.

Victim has four meanings. Firstly it is a person that is harmed, injured, or killed as a result of a crime, accident, event or action. Secondly it is a person who is tricked or duped. Thirdly it is a person who is feeling helpless and passive in the face of misfortune or ill treatment. Lastly it is a living creature killed ass a religious sacrifice.

An example of the word victim used in a sentence would be:

She was a victim of identity fraud and lost thousands of pounds.

They tricked him and he became the latest victim of their hoax.

The inability to do anything to help made him feel like a victim.

Or, It was a creepy basement, it looked like a place you might take a sacrificial victim for a ritual.

Synonyms: sufferer, casualty, loss, dupe, offering.

Antonyms: attacker, criminal, assailant. conman, hunter.
