Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is surety.

Nouns are words that we use to name things. It can be a person, a place, a thing, an
idea or concept. Therefore, surety is a noun.

Surety has three meanings. Firstly it is a person who takes responsibility for another's performance of an undertaking. Secondly it is money given or offered as a guarantee that a duty will be performed, usually as collateral to be taken if the task is not performed. Lastly it is the state of being sure or certain or something.

An example of the word surety used in a sentence would be:

She was unwittingly the surety of her son's actions, despite the fact that he left home many years ago.

Their bail was set with a surety of £300.

Or, His surety was reassuring to them, it made them feel like they were doing the right thing.

Synonyms: guarantor, sponsor, pledge, collateral, insurance.

Antonyms: forfeiture, loss, sacrifice, doubt, uncertainty.
