Today’s word of the day is revolt.

Revolt is a doing word therefore it is a verb.

Revolt has three meanings. Firstly it is to take violent action against an established government or ruler. Secondly it is to refuse to acknowledge a particular authority. Lastly it is to cause or feel disgust.

An example of the word revolt used as a verb in a sentence would be:

The people wanted to revolt against the King for his cruel actions.

Our employees will revolt if we keep treating them like this, we need to give them better working conditions.

Or, She found him to be gross, everything he did made her revolt.

Revolt can also be used as a noun, with two meanings. Firstly it is the name of an attempt to end the authority of a person or organisation by rebelling. Secondly it is the name of a refusal to continue to obey or conform.

An example of the word revolt used as a noun in a sentence would be:

We can't impose such unjust rules, there'll be a revolt!

Or, I revolt against your wishes, I won't do as you say.

Synonyms: rebel, rise, disgust, upset, beastly.

Antonyms: calm, harmony, comply, join, obey.
