Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is percussion.

Nouns are words that we use to name things. It can be a person, a place, a thing, an
idea or concept. Therefore, percussion is a noun.

Percussion has three definitions. Firstly it is the name of musical instruments that are played by either striking them with a stick or beater, or shaking them. Secondly it is the striking of one solid object with or against another with some degree of force. Lastly, in medicine, it is the action of tapping a part of the body as part of a diagnosis.

An example of the word percussion used as a noun in a sentence would be:

Examples of percussion instruments include drums, xylophones and maracas.

They were frightened by the sudden percussion of falling debris hitting the floor.

Or, She was concerned about her patient after percussion produced a dull sound, indicating an unknown solid mass.

Synonyms: crash, bang, smash, clash, thump.
