Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is parse.

Parse is a doing word therefore it is a verb.

Parse has two definitions. Firstly it is to resolve a sentence into its component parts and describe their syntactic roles. Secondly, in computing, it is to analyse a string or text into logical syntactic components.

An example of the word parse used as a verb in a sentence would be:

Her ability to swiftly and efficiently parse through sentences was essential for the translation project.

Or, The program is set to parse inputs into an internal conceptual representation.

Parse can also be used as a noun, naming the act of parsing a string or text in computing.

An example of the word parse used as a noun in a sentence would be:

The parse failed so we were presented with an error message instead of the data.

Synonyms: analyse, construe, deconstruct, interpret, decipher.

Antonyms: synthesise, combine, assemble, integrate, amalgamate.
