Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is opus.

Nouns are words that we use to name things. It can be a person, a place, a thing, an
idea or concept. Therefore, opus is a noun.

Opus has two meanings. Firstly it is a piece of music written by a particular composer, usually used for a classical music composer and numbered to show the order in which the music was made. Secondly, any piece of art can be referred to as an opus, though this is not common.

An example of opus used as a noun in a sentence would be:

Beethoven released his third opus in 1794.

Or, It was her first opus but it was very popular in the gallery.

Synonyms: work, piece, composition, invention, creation.
