[Transcript:

Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is occlusion.

Nouns are words that we use to name things. It can be a person, a place, a thing, an
idea or concept. Therefore, occlusion is a noun.

Occlusion has three meanings. Firstly, in medicine, it is the blockage or closing of a blood vessel or hollow organ. Secondly, in meteorology, it is a process by which the cold front of a rotating low-pressure system catches up the warm front, so that the warm air between them is forced upwards off the Earth's surface between wedges of cold air. Lastly, in dentistry, it is the position of the teeth when the jaws are closed.

An example of occlusion used as a noun in a sentence would be:

An occlusion can reduce or even stop the flow of oxygen-rich blood to downstream vital tissues like the heart, brain, or extremities.

In meteorology an occlusion is more commonly known as an occluded front.

Or, A dentist can check a patient's occlusion by observing how the teeth make contact when they bite down normally.

Thank you for listening, we hope that you found it helpful and interesting. Until next time.]
