Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is merit.

Nouns are words that we use to name things. It can be a person, a place, a thing, an
idea or concept. Therefore, merit is a noun.

Merit has five meanings. Firstly it is the quality of being particularly good or worthy. Secondly it is a good feature or point. Thirdly it is a passing grade in an examination that denotes above average performance. Fourthly, in law, it is the intrinsic rights and wrongs of a case. Lastly, in theology, it is good deeds entitling someone to a future reward from God.

An example of the word merit used as a noun in a sentence would be:

The studio was known for creating films of outstanding merit.

We have to consider the merit of this approach.

She was on track to pass with a merit but she planned to study hard and get a distinction.

The plaintiff's side has the task of arguing the merit of their case.

Or, The role of human merit in Christian life is a point of dispute between Catholics and Protestants.

Merit can also be used as a verb, meaning to deserve or be worthy of reward, punishment, or attention.

An example of merit used as a verb in a sentence would be:

I think that this will merit further investigation, since the details aren't adding up.

Or, After careful consideration, she came to the conclusion that their actions didn't merit punishment.

Synonyms: excellence, goodness, advantage, benefit, warrant.

Antonyms: deficiency, flaw, blemish, vice, negative.
