Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is homogeneous.

Homogeneous is a descriptive word therefore it is an adjective.

Homogeneous has four definitions. Firstly it describes things as being of the same kind or alike. Secondly it describes things as consisting of parts all of the same kind. Thirdly, in maths, it describes things as containing terms all of the same degree. Lastly, in chemistry, it describes something as denoting a process involving substances in the same phase.

An example of the word homogeneous used as an adjective in a sentence would be:

The unemployed are not a homogeneous group, they are individuals with different circumstances.

She squashed all of the play doh together to form a homogeneous blob.

We're learning about homogeneous functions in maths today.

Or, Salt water is an example of a homogeneous mixture because the dissolved salt is evenly distributed throughout.


Synonyms: similar, equivalent, parallel, uniform, alike.


Antonyms: heterogeneous, different, dissimilar, individual, varied.
