Fundamental is a descriptive word therefore it is an adjective.
Fundamental has three meanings. Firstly it describes something as forming a necessary base or core. Secondly it describes something as affecting or relating to the essential nature or crucial point of something. Lastly it describes something as being so basic that it would be hard to alter, resolve or overcome.

Lack of support is a fundamental issue for them.
Or, Creativity is a fundamental part of who she is, working in an office would suffocate her.
Fundamental can also be used as a noun with two meanings. Firstly it is a central or primary rule or principle on which something is based. Secondly, in music, it is a fundamental note, tone or frequency.

A fundamental of photography is knowing how to visualise a frame.
