Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is delegate.

Nouns are words that we use to name things. It can be a person, a place, a thing, an
idea or concept. Therefore, delegate is a noun.

Delegate has two meanings. Firstly it is a person sent or authorised to represent others. Secondly it is a member of a committee.

An example of delegate used as a noun in a sentence would be:

She was asked to act as delegate for them and represent their views at the meeting.

Or, He's the newest delegate of the group.

Delegate can also be used as a verb, with two meanings. Firstly it is to entrust a task or responsibility to another person. Secondly it is to send or authorise someone to do something as a representative.

An example of delegate used as a verb in a sentence would be:

I don't have time to do all of this by myself so I'll have to delegate some to the tasks to the others.

Or, They wanted to delegate him to get a good deal for them.

Synonyms: representative, envoy, ambassador, authorise, entrust.
