Listen "Helping Leaders Create Stigma Free Mental Wellbeing Workplace Cultures with: Adam Nemer"
Episode Synopsis
In a 2021 American Psychological Association survey, nearly 3 in 5 employees (59%) said they have experienced negative impacts of work-related stress in the past month, and a vast majority (87%) of employees think actions from their employer would help their mental health. For Adam Nemer a Mental Health Leadership Consultant After a 20 year leadership career in Healthcare, mostly as a CFO and Sr Operations Executive, I've launched Simple Mental Health Leadership Consulting (www.simplementalhealth.com). Our purpose is to help leaders create stigma-free mental wellbeing workplace cultures. We do that by putting mental health literacy in their leadership toolboxes right next to marketing, finance, sales, and all the other skills they acquire over our careers. Our mission is simple: help organizations improve employee retention, performance, engagement and happiness by facilitating the creation of mental health literate leaders and psychologically safe organizations.
At least 20% of American's every year experience a clinically diagnosable mental illness that pains the individual and impacts the performance of organizations just as much as any physical illness. While stigma still prevents most people from getting care, awareness of mental illness in the workplace has grown significantly post-pandemic. So much that the US Surgeon General has identified "Workplace Wellness" as one of the top 5 population health priorities for the country and 81% of workers report that they will be looking for workplaces that support mental health in the future.
However, all the way from senior leaders to line supervisors, leaders don't know what to do. Their education and training was informed by the myths and stigmas of mental illness. (eg: "Leave your emotions at the door.") Widely adopted workplace wellness investments aren't "righting the ship." They're strategies bumping up against traditional organizational cultures. That's where we come in. We teach you what to do.
We partner with you to incubate compassionate leaders who understand the connections between their leadership approach, their colleague’s mental wellbeing, and core business metrics such as turnover, attendance, productivity, employee engagement and team dynamic. Leaders committed to creating psychologically safety among their teams. Leaders who don't see their teammates as employees or colleagues who are supposed to leave their emotions at the door, but as people who can’t be separated from their feelings. He joined me this week to tell me more.
