Sam grew up in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but when her family slowly stopped attending, she began to feel isolated and out of place. In a Church so centered on family, Sam questioned whether she truly belonged and stepped away. Even though she kept close ties with her LDS friends, she turned to behaviors outside of LDS Church standards. Years later, she began dating one of her friends, just as he decided to serve a mission. That moment unexpectedly brought back a childhood memory: sitting in Primary, dreaming of serving a mission herself.
