Episode Synopsis

This episode of Keep Moving was recorded the day before Edmonton's city council voted unanimously in favour of a new public spaces bylaw. The bylaw heightens prohibitions of life-sustaining practices by the city's unhoused residents. Voting against the bylaw was yet another opportunity for Edmonton's municipal government to be brave, and meaningfully support the city's unhoused residents . Instead, city council voted to enhance punitive and carceral measures against our neighbours most impacted by intersecting crises including commodified housing and unsafe drugs. The bylaw's prohibitions are coupled with the consequences of first responders' indifference, and general public indifference, towards our unhoused neighbours. We discuss examples of this indifference in public spaces, and how it is tied to the further exploitation of the houseless community as a burden of “unsafeness” in order to increase collective empathy for first responders and justify their salary increases. Meanwhile, funding is cut to programs that increased safety for all Edmontonians, and our unhoused community is further stigmatized and harmed. So what can we do if we can't rely on our so-called municipal leaders? We can rely on each other. We finish this episode by beginning a discussion on how to disrupt the indifference prevalent in our city. Keep Moving is a podcast about life in the beautiful Beaver Hills, houseless encampments, Pekiwewin, and much more.
