Listen "Media & Technology at Funerals"
Episode Synopsis
In this episode, we’re exploring how media and technology are transforming the way we say goodbye. From live-streamed services and digital music systems to personalised video tributes and online memorial pages — technology is becoming a big part of modern funerals. But does it make the farewell more meaningful, or risk turning it into too much of a production? We’ll start by looking at what’s available locally across crematoria in North and North East Lincolnshire, including systems like Obitus and Wesley Media, which provide digital music, slideshow tributes, and service recordings. We’ll talk about how families are using these tools — whether it’s a favourite song played during reflection, a photo montage of special memories, or a webcast allowing loved ones to watch from afar. Then, we’ll discuss the benefits and challenges. There’s no doubt technology can connect people who can’t be there in person and create lasting keepsakes. But there are also real concerns: the added costs, technical glitches, and questions about privacy when funerals are streamed online. We’ll ask — are funerals becoming too polished, too “media-driven”? Or are these tools simply helping us tell a person’s story in a way that feels true to them? Finally, we’ll share our own reflections — what we’d want at our own funerals, and how technology could (or couldn’t) play a part in that moment. This is Just Talk Funeral — real conversations about how tradition and technology meet when we say our final goodbyes.
