Listen "Black Trauma on Screen"
Episode Synopsis
So the other day I was messaging with my friends about this Instagram video by comedian Wellington Ojukwu (https://www.instagram.com/tv/COTFjWSnSh0/). In the video he talked how too many movies and TV shows about black people or the black experience are often centered around trauma, violence against Black people, and hopelessness. I was just standing in my bathroom, getting ready to go to bed, and thinking about the films and tv shows mentioned. It made me think of this quote by Jane Espenson. She is a television writer and producer who served in those roles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer for five years. The quote goes: "If we can't write diversity into sci-fi, then what's the point? You don't create new worlds to give them all the same limits of the old ones." I want to emphasize the second sentence because it’s what came to mind when thinking about the conversation with my friends the day before.
