To repent means to “change direction” from walking by yourself away from God to the direction of walking with Christ. 
Before we can repent, we must admit that we are sinners and that we cannot save ourselves or earn our way into Heaven.  Jesus was famous for saying to sinners, “Follow me”.
An addict or an alcoholic, cannot seek treatment until they first admit that they have an addiction problem.  One cannot seek God until they acknowledge that they are a sinner and cannot save
themselves.  Jesus is knocking.
Jesus says to you:
“I am the way, and the truth, and
the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
– John 14:6
