Listen "What Great Schools Do #2 - Schools Where Students Want to Be"
Episode Synopsis
This episode is part 2 of a series we are running called “What Great Schools Do”. In this series, we will discuss different aspects, the actions that are taken, and the ideas that ensure success in high performing schools. What is a great school? We are defining it as a school where student outcomes in both learning and life are positively impacted. Where because of the school and the actions that it takes, students make progress. There is no way that I have captured all the elements that go into making a good school, so please don’t think that if your idea is not in this list, that it is not important. Rather, this is a series that reflects my thinking right now and will certainly evolve over time. For our second aspect of What Great Schools Do, I focus on creating schools where students want to be. I speak about different aspects of creating schools that are welcoming to students by discussing the following areas: relationships, academic engagement, fun, safety, fairness & equity, and voice.Connect with Intersection Education:Visit the WebsiteSubscribe to the newsletterFollow us on TwitterLike us on FacebookShow Notes:The Third Path: A Relationship-Based Approach to Student Well-being and Achievement by Dr. David Tranter, Lori Carson, & Tom BolandRelationships by American Institutes for ResearchSchool Connectedness: Improving Students’ Lives by Dr. Robert BlumThe benefits of bonding at every age by Dr. Paul SchwartzKids These Days by Dr. Jody CarringtonWhat is Student Engagement and Why is it Important? by Jonathan Martin and Amada TorresSchool Engagement: Potential of the Concept, State of the Evidence by Jennifer A Fredricks, Phyllis C Blumenfeld, Alison H ParisJoy in School by Steven Wolk10 Insights to Enhance the Joy of Learning by Scott Barry KaufmanNo grammar schools, lots of play: the secrets of Europe’s top education system by Patrick ButlerBullying in Schools and What to Do About It by Dr. Ken RigbyDreamkeepers by Gloria Ladson-BillingsHow Does an Equity Audit Work?
