Illinois Football Hosts Maryland in Military Appreciation Game, Honoring Service Members and VeteransThe Illinois Fighting Illini are back in action today, hosting Maryland at Gies Memorial Stadium for their annual Military Appreciation Game. The game, set for a 2:30 PM Central Time kickoff, will be broadcast nationally on FS One. The Illini, currently 6-3 overall and 3-3 in the Big Ten, are celebrating veterans, active-duty military, and their families.Nearly 2,000 tickets have been given to service members and supporting organizations for todays game. Special events include a unique coin for the coin toss, ROTC cadets rappelling off the stadium, and an Army swearing-in ceremony on the field during the first timeout of the first quarter.Ben Miller, Illinois Senior Head Coach Analyst and an Air Force veteran, will serve as the honorary captain for the game. Miller, a cancer survivor and liver transplant recipient, has been with the Illini football staff for five seasons. He previously coached special teams and tight ends before taking a health-related leave in 2022 after a colon cancer diagnosis.The Illini are already bowl-eligible, but they have a chance to finish the season strong with four straight wins. After todays game against Maryland, theyll face Wisconsin next week and then Northwestern on November 25th. Maryland, with a record of 5-5 overall and 2-5 in the Big Ten, is led by quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, who has been one of the top freshmen players in the nation.Maryland, coached by former Illini assistant Mike Locksley, has lost their last five games and needs to win at least two of their final three to become bowl-eligible themselves.
