They were added during a 19th century restoration as practical architectural features - they may have included water spouts or something to redirect water runoff from the building. He started his career with BBC Radio Ulster, had a stint broadcasting in Cyprus, before moving to work for the BBC in London on everything from Chucklevision to the death of Diana before working fulltime for BBC Radio 1.
