It also has made it possible for people to feel they have the right to say anything. For trolls to create division and perpetuate lies. Don't go there. Speak your truth but If people want to bully and be mean, ignore them. Their opinion is not your problem.  You'll never change their mind anyway so don't spend your precious energy trying to justify and defend.
